Lawful Grace ‘Theology’

Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course you didn’t! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ.
Why, then, was the law given? Well, it was given alongside ‘the promise’ to show people their sins. God sent Christ Jesus to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that He could adopt us as His very own children.

The law was designed to last only until the coming of the Child who was promised. God gave His law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people.
God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. As people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.
So, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning, then? Of course not! The old way, with laws etched in stone, actually led to death (because of sin’s power over us), though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to even look at Moses’ face, for his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away. No one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. God has shown us a way to be made right with Him without keeping the exact requirements of the law, as was promised in the writings of Moses and the prophets long ago.
Previously, like me, you let yourselves be slaves to impurity and lawlessness, which led ever deeper into sin. But now you must instead give yourselves to be slaves to righteous living so that you will become HOLY.
We have been released from the law, for we died to it (with Christ) and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, then; not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit. I can no longer count on my own ‘righteousness’ through obeying the law; rather, I instead become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with Himself depends on FAITH. At one time I lived without understanding the law. But when I learned the command not to covet, for instance, the power of sin came to life, and I died. But sin is no longer our master, for we no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, we live under the freedom of God’s grace. Therefore, I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.

Warning: if you are trying to make yourselves right with God by keeping the law, the bible says that you have actually been CUT OFF from Christ! You have fallen away from God’s grace. I’ll say it again. If you are trying to find favour with God by ‘being circumcised’, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses, without failure (which is impossible!). But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do, in freedom from these things, for even Rabbi Paul of Tarsus became like us Gentiles—freed from those laws. Can any of us boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. Well then, if we emphasise faith, does this mean that we can forget about the law? Of course not! In fact, only when we have faith do we truly fulfil the law. If God’s promise is only for those who obey the law, then faith is not necessary and the promise is pointless. So I think it is very clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”

Christ has truly set us free to follow Him and obey His Spirit. Now, make sure that you stay free, and PLEASE don’t get tied up in slavery to the law of Moses. God saved you by His grace when you believed. And no one can take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
