“Dianoigo”

From: £8.50

This image depicts the crucifixion scene in an abstract way, with the crucified Christ on the hilt of the sword (the cross) that is killing Death, as He himself descends into the jaws of Death. “Dianoigo” means ‘Be opened’, and was used several times in the gospels by Jesus and others especially in terms of healing miracles. Here, Death’s mouth is being commanded to be opened in this image so that Jesus can deliver His killing blow on our behalf, at His own expense. Praise God!

Description

In Mark 7, we see this: “And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, “Ephphatha”, that is, “Be opened.” And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.”

Ephphatha is the Aramaic for ‘Be Opened’. Afterwards, Mark says in the King James Version ‘that is, be opened’, but in the actual Greek Mark says ‘Dianoigo’.
